Ascending Angel was created in 2016, during one of the most profound turning points in Aurelio Milera’s life. After the passing of his mother—and after years of caring for her—Milera entered a deep artistic silence. For nearly three months, he could not paint.
Everything shifted during a visit to the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes, guided by his partner, now his wife. Something long-muted was stirred awake.
That same night, back at her home—where Milera kept several canvases and boards for the rare moments when inspiration visited him—he sat on the dining-room floor and painted Ascending Angel in a single, uninterrupted breath, as if the work had been waiting for him through the months of grief.
Around the central figure, hybrid attendants and ceremonial beings accompany the ascent—echoes of memory, ritual, and the cultural imagination that shaped Milera’s inner world. The angel embodies not only the pain of loss, but also the fragile beauty of spiritual release and the persistence of love beyond the body.
Ascending Angel became both tribute and transformation. Born from mourning and illuminated by transcendence, it turns sorrow into quiet radiance—offering a gesture of healing, a soft resurrection.
As an acquisition, the work carries rare emotional resonance: an intimate moment of rebirth captured at the threshold between personal loss and artistic awakening. It stands as one of Milera’s most poignant and meaningful creations.
